For the audio intelligence of the Apple Watch, Apple has specifically designed a module on the chip called Secure Exclusive.
This is a feature that Apple has deployed two years in advance to highlight its "privacy" characteristics. Because two years ago, the iPhone 16 series chips began to have this module built-in.
If we consider the design cycle of smartphones and chips, Apple had already made plans for the "Voice Transcription and Daily Summary" just released yesterday at least three years ago.
The core consists of two functions, 'Siri Recap' and 'Live Rewind'.
one ️⃣ Siri Recap directly benchmarks AI meeting recording cards like Plaude, but can be activated 24/7. Siri Recap may be more suitable for real-life scenarios (which also requires specific hands-on experience to understand), while other companies are optimized for office scenarios.
The audio is collected by Apple Watch S12/Ultra 4, and the raw data can only be read by Secure Exclusive. But after all, the computing power of the watch is limited, so the audio is transmitted to the phone's Secure Exclave through Bluetooth.
Only the hardware of Secure Exclave on mobile phones can process audio transcription into text, and after optimizing the device's large language model, users can see the complete transcribed text.
Next, the processed text will be uploaded to Apple's AI Privacy Cloud (PCC), where it will be summarized and organized using their strongest LLM and transmitted back to the iPhone.
two ️⃣ The function of 'Live Rewind' is to allow users to quickly view what the other person said in the first 15 seconds, in the form of text, on the watch.
I haven't imagined the specific scenario yet, but obviously Apple thinks this is a very frequent feature and has designed a shortcut startup method for it: double-click the crown.
The basic process is similar to Siri Recap, but it still requires the phone to be around the watch. The difference is that it only caches the transcribed text from the last 15 seconds. Of course, users can save specific text for future use.
three ️⃣ Secure Exclusive and Secure Enclave
Apple built a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) module into its chips over a decade ago: the Secure Enclave. Apple will isolate this area from other processing areas and provide an additional layer of security specifically designed to ensure data security, even if the application or processor is attacked.
And Secure Exclave (currently not officially translated, let's call it a secure enclave for now) is a new thing that is specifically designed to process sensor privacy data independently of other parts of the system. For example, on the Apple Watch S12, the original audio can only be processed through this module and there are no other modules that can read or decrypt it.
four ️⃣ One of the main battlefields for future AI will definitely be who can obtain more and more continuous user contexts.
Apple is entering this scenario with the Apple Watch: first, let the device continuously sense, and then find a way to solve users' privacy concerns with Secure Exclave.
But this competition is far from conclusive. Strong AI productivity requires sufficient context; And strong enough privacy naturally limits how data can be used.
Apple is now betting that they can get both of these things at the same time.
