Researchers from the Ethereum Foundation, Theta Labs, and StarkWare have jointly published a paper, leveraging AI programming agents to deeply optimize the core operations of Shor's algorithm. This optimization reduces the computational resources required for potential quantum attacks on Bitcoin and Ethereum (secp256k1 encryption system) by over 50% compared to Google's benchmark from March this year. The logical qubits required for the circuit have been reduced to 1,151 (and even down to 813 in subsequent versions). Although current quantum hardware cannot directly compromise public blockchains, the research shows that pure algorithmic optimization is significantly shortening the quantum threat timeline.
