[California Governor Signs Two AI Safety Bills Supported by Anthropic and OpenAI, Establishing Mechanisms for Third-Party Safety Assessments of AI Systems] According to POLITICO, California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed two AI safety-related bills aimed at regulating mechanisms for third-party safety assessments of AI systems. One bill, proposed by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, will establish a registration system and ethical standards for external AI auditing organizations. Another bill, introduced by former U.S. Congressman and State Senator Jerry McNerney, will have the state government set standards and review the qualifications and evaluation capabilities of 'Independent Verification Organizations.' Anthropic had previously expressed public support for the legislation, and OpenAI also voiced its support prior to the signing, stating that it will continue to advocate for AI safety legislation across states.
