A report released in August by Democratic staff of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee (JEC) provided an even higher estimate. The committee calculated that Trump's broader oil and gas investment portfolio could have increased in total value by as much as $15.5 million since the beginning of the year. This report quickly sparked political backlash. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized in a post, claiming that Trump instigated conflicts with Iran this year, directly driving the surge in oil and gas stocks, while his own massive holdings soared as a result.
