[Vitalik: Hoping EIP-8288 is Included in the I-star Upgrade to Significantly Reduce Quantum-Secure Transaction Costs]
BlockBeats News, September 9 — Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a post introducing the recursive STARK mempool proposal EIP-8288, expressing hope that it will be included in the I-star upgrade following Hegota. This proposal aims to reduce on-chain computation and data costs by moving signatures and proofs outside Ethereum's core execution path and recursively aggregating STARKs in the mempool.
Vitalik stated that the proposal could enable low-cost quantum-secure signatures and privacy protocols. Specifically, the cost of quantum-secure private transactions is expected to drop from approximately 10 million Gas to tens of thousands of Gas. Moreover, it can support new signature or proof schemes like Falcon and ML-DSA without requiring modifications to the EVM, while also enabling private account abstraction.
According to the design, nodes will periodically aggregate transaction dependencies and generate recursive STARKs, while block builders will generate proofs for transactions intended to be included in blocks. The additional on-chain overhead per block is approximately one 100 to 300 KB STARK and 96 bytes of data for each statement to be proven.
