[The Entire Digital Asset Industry in Iran Included in U.S. Sanctions, U.S. Treasury Expands OFAC Authority]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Bitcoin News posted on the X platform stating that the U.S. Treasury has expanded the scope of sanctions against Iran, including the country's entire digital asset industry within the sanctionable range. OFAC is authorized to take action against industry operators regardless of their location. This measure took effect on August 24 and also includes sanctions on gold, shipping, aviation, and technology.
Elliptic tracking revealed that Iran's central bank has acquired at least $507 million worth of USDT; Tether froze $344 million USDT linked to the bank in April. Iran has also obtained crypto assets through Bitcoin mining, with Elliptic estimating that its Bitcoin mining accounts for approximately 4.5% of the global total, generating crypto assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
This measure does not automatically sanction all Iranian cryptocurrency users, but the U.S. Treasury has gained greater authority to target the industry and supporters of designated entities associated with it.
