According to the Economic Times of India, some overseas platforms are allowing Indian users to purchase gift cards and vouchers usable in India with stablecoins like USDT or other crypto assets. These can be used for groceries, fuel, mobile recharges, food delivery, gold, and more. Typically, users transfer crypto assets from private wallets to overseas platforms, which then provide redemption codes through local Indian gift card partners. One platform, which has issued over 16 million cards for Indian users, reportedly exchanged 1 USDT for around 88 INR, while the market price of USDT in India at the time exceeded 95 INR. This pathway has caught the attention of Indian authorities, raising potential regulatory concerns around cross-border payments, foreign exchange, taxation, and anti-money laundering requirements.
