ED MARKEY IS NOT GOOD FOR UNION JOBS Ed Markey has arguably hurt Union jobs more than anyone else left in congress. THE PROOF: 1) He Voted for NAFTA in 1993. Manufacturing unions like the UAW and Steelworkers warned against this vote. Markey didn’t listen. It opened the floodgates for companies to shut down domestic plants, relocate production to Mexico, and offshore tens of thousands of high-paying union jobs. 2) He Granted China Permanent Trade Status in 2000 without safeguards for American manufacturing and it started the China Shock - a massive shift that gutted the American Rust Belt and wiped out an estimated 2 to 3 million American manufacturing jobs over the following decade. 3) Markey repeatedly votes YES to dramatically increase H-1B visas. Instead of forcing corporations to invest in training American workers and raising wages, these votes flooded the specialized tech and engineering markets with lower-cost foreign labor and suppressing American wages. H-1B Visas were intended for highly specialized jobs that few Americans could fill. Today, 7-Eleven Cashiers and housekeeping jobs at hotels go to foreign workers because they will work for lower rates and don’t have other options. 4) He Repeatedly Voted Against Building Trades Union Jobs. Markey voted NO on authorizing the Keystone XL Pipeline and NO on expediting LNG export terminal permits. Building trades unions - including LiUNA, the Pipefitters, and the Operating Engineers - begged Congress for these infrastructure projects because they meant tens of thousands of high-wage, union construction and maintenance jobs. Markey chose environmental ideology over union paychecks. 5) Markey co-authored and voted YES on the Waxman-Markey Cap-and-Trade Bill. By placing heavy carbon taxes on heavy manufacturing, coal, and steel, this bill would’ve spiked electricity costs for domestic factories - giving a massive competitive advantage to foreign competitors like China, India, and Brazil who face no such mandates, and losing more American Union jobs. I’m well aware that Union leadership endorse Markey. That’s pure politics. He’s a sitting U.S. Senator. But Union workers should pay attention to what Markey does - not what he says. I have fought for Union workers my entire legal career. I have represented autoworkers, pipe-fitters, shipyard workers, boilermakers, electricians, Truck drivers, Iron workers, insulators, plumbers and HVAC workers, etc. I have fought against multibillion dollar corporations and insurance companies for working families in court and I’ll do the same in the Senate.(John E Deaton)
