The G7 Cybersecurity Working Group has warned that governments and businesses should migrate to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) as soon as possible. Attackers could steal and store currently encrypted data, waiting until quantum computing capabilities are sufficient to decrypt it. Digital signatures also face the risk of being cracked. While the report does not directly mention cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana also rely on public key cryptography. Bitcoin developers are exploring post-quantum solutions, including BIP-360. Ethereum researchers are evaluating alternative cryptographic components for accounts, validators, and applications. Meanwhile, the Solana Foundation has already tested post-quantum signatures on its testnet and introduced an optional hash-based fund protection scheme. The G7 recommends that countries develop national-level PQC migration strategies and promote collaboration between public and private sectors, along with updates to procurement standards.
