**[Microsoft Consolidates Agent Development: AI Frontiers Merged into MAI]**
Beating AI Newsflash: Microsoft has transferred AI Frontiers from Microsoft Research to Microsoft AI (MAI), led by Mustafa Suleyman. This lab, established in October 2023, primarily focuses on small models and Agents. Projects such as AutoGen, FARA, Magentic-One, Magentic-UI, and Phi were all developed by this team. The multi-Agent open-source framework AutoGen was later integrated into Microsoft's unified Agent development framework, Microsoft Agent Framework, alongside the AI application development SDK Semantic Kernel. AI Frontiers will continue conducting cutting-edge research on Agents and models moving forward.
MAI is also training a series of models and has formed a Superintelligence team with the goal of developing what it calls "Humanist Superintelligence." Microsoft defines this as high-capability AI designed to address specific problems, remain under human control, and serve humanity.
The former head of AI Frontiers, Ece Kamar, recently left Microsoft after 16 years of service. She described founding AI Frontiers as one of the highlights of her career at Microsoft. Her next destination has not yet been announced. [Original Link]
