Why do people who made big money in one market cycle end up losing it more easily in the next?
When I first entered the crypto space, I thought those who had made big money were more experienced and would only make even more in the next cycle. But later, I realized that past success can sometimes be more dangerous than failure.
In a bull market, everything goes up, and it’s easy to mistake the market’s gains for your own skills.
After your account multiplies a few times, your position sizes get bigger, your stop-losses get wider, and you even start feeling like average returns aren’t good enough for you anymore. If you made 10x in the last cycle, seeing just a 30% gain in the next one feels underwhelming.
I’ve been through this kind of overconfidence too.
When you catch the main trend in one cycle, you might mistakenly think you’ve figured out the market. Then you try to apply the same strategy to a different phase. But what works in a bull market—like chasing pumps—gets you wrecked in a choppy market. Diversifying into altcoins works when everything is pumping, but when liquidity dries up, you’re left holding a bag no one wants.
The hardest thing to admit is this: making money is a mix of skill and the gift of timing.
When the market environment changes, what used to work can become your most expensive obsession.
Before every new market cycle, you should treat yourself like someone who needs to prove themselves all over again: reassess liquidity, reevaluate your position sizes, and accept that “this time might not be as easy to make money.”
Remember: the real danger isn’t never having made big money—it’s making it once and then writing luck into your personal playbook as if it were skill.
