As technology continues to shape how we communicate, we must also pay attention to how information can affect our democracy. Across the Caribbean, false information, misinformation, hate speech and deliberate attempts to damage people’s character are becoming real challenges. These issues affect all of us because what we see, share and believe online can influence how we understand our country and each other. At the 48th Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, I encouraged parliamentarians to have deeper conversations about how we use technology to strengthen our democracies while protecting them from its harmful effects. Parliamentary conferences give us an opportunity to share experiences, learn from one another and find solutions that can work in our different countries. This is a conversation we cannot afford to ignore.(Andrew Holness)
