Sam Altman: OpenAI expects to achieve AGI by the end of 2026 According to Forbes, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in an exclusive interview with TIME magazine that the company expects to achieve an internal AGI system by the end of 2026, as defined by their standards—an AI capable of matching or surpassing human performance in most tasks of economic value. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen mentioned that the company has 'completed 80% of the journey,' while co-founder Greg Brockman believes that two years from now, people might look back on this period as the moment AGI was born. OpenAI's upcoming Astra model has already passed the internal automated AI research intern benchmark, capable of conducting experiments and completing tasks that previously took human researchers a week. Altman described Astra as 'the first model capable of inventing new things in a meaningful way.' OpenAI is also developing multiple devices (including a desktop device set to launch in early 2027), its own inference chip called Jalapeño, and humanoid robots.
