Just landed and immediately saw a stream of notifications about market drops. Looks like Waller made some hawkish remarks at the Jackson Hole Symposium. Skimmed through the speech, and the market generally interprets Waller's comment, 'We still have work to do,' as meaning that if there’s no clear path to 2% inflation, the Fed might consider a rate hike in upcoming meetings.
Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with this statement. Even if Powell were the one speaking, he’d probably say the same thing. After all, the Fed’s role is to reduce inflation and maintain employment balance. But this doesn’t necessarily mean the Fed will hike rates in September.
Everyone knows that the main driver of inflation right now is oil prices, so oil prices will likely be the key factor influencing the Fed’s next rate decision. And honestly, I don’t believe the Fed will adjust rates in September.
