According to CNBC, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh stated at the Jackson Hole annual meeting that although this summer's PCE and CPI data exceeded expectations, it is not enough to indicate a significant improvement in underlying inflation trends. Warsh did not provide a clear direction for the September rate decision and refused to commit to fixed forward guidance or a policy "reaction function," saying he prefers to build a "quieter, more purposeful" Fed. He also noted that market participants should not rely primarily on Fed statements to decide their next trade.
Warsh emphasized that the Fed must confirm that underlying inflation is returning to the 2% target at a sufficiently clear and fast pace; otherwise, there is still work to be done. He also stressed that future policies should follow discipline rather than preset decisions, and pointed out that geopolitical factors, global supply chains, and technological changes are reducing the reliability of economic forecasts.
