Had dinner today and heard a pretty interesting story from a friend.
She said she first learned about Bitcoin back in 2013 when she was still in school. Then, in March 2014, she spent $157.27 to buy 0.25 BTC at an average price of just $622.24.
Turns out, her Coinbase account had some issues, and she couldn’t log in for years. So, that 0.25 BTC ended up being held passively for over a decade. It wasn’t until after 2022 that she finally resolved the account problem. Then last year, in May 2025, when Bitcoin hit $100K, she sold that 0.25 BTC for $25,447.46.
$157.27 turned into $25,447.46—roughly a 162x return.
The craziest part is that she even dug out her old purchase record and last year’s sale record to show me. Sure enough, she bought it on March 13, 2014, and sold it on May 9, 2025.
By the way, it only hit me today that Coinbase was already letting people buy Bitcoin directly back in 2014. BTC was only $600-something back then—looking back now, that really feels like ancient history.
