[Open-Source Models Turn the Tables: Vercel Token Share Rises from 28% to 62% in Two Months]
Beating AI Newsflash: Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch announced that as of August 22, open-source models now account for 62% of AI Gateway Token traffic. This is a significant increase from just 28.4% on June 24, more than doubling in two months. During the same period, closed-source models dropped from 71.6% to 38%. Vercel AI Gateway's statistics reflect actual model usage on its platform and do not represent the entire AI market.
Meanwhile, AI usage on Vercel is also skyrocketing. In July, the total Token volume increased by 59% month-over-month, with open-source models accounting for more than one-third of the total. DeepSeek has even surpassed Google to become the second-largest model provider in terms of Token consumption. The combined Token volume of OpenAI and Anthropic is also accelerating.
However, the revenue is still being captured by closed-source models. In July, open-weight models accounted for approximately 36% of Token usage but only 8.6% of spending. Anthropic, on the other hand, used about 30% of Tokens but captured 65.1% of spending. In the future, cutting-edge closed-source models may account for only 15% to 25% of Token usage but capture 60% to 90% of the economic value. [Original Link]
