[Korean Bank: 94% of Youth Unemployment Over the Past 4 Years Stems from AI-Exposed Industries]
DeepFlow Tech News, August 18 — According to the report titled 'BOK Issue Note' released by the High Employment Research Team of the Korean Bank's Investigation Bureau on August 18, between June 2022 and June 2026, a total of 285,000 jobs for Korean youth (aged 15-29) are expected to be reduced, with 268,000 (94%) concentrated in AI-exposed industries, including information services, publishing, computer programming, and professional services.
Meanwhile, employment for individuals aged 50 and above is projected to increase by 230,000 jobs, with 75.2% of these also coming from AI-exposed industries. The report highlights that following the release of ChatGPT, the average unemployment rate for university graduates rose to 7.0%, higher than the 5.4% rate for youth with vocational or lower education levels, whereas previously, the two groups showed almost no difference.
The report recommends that policies should focus on building new career pathways to help young people accumulate experience and skills with the assistance of AI, rather than simply preserving entry-level positions.
