[Georgia Man Indicted for Alleged $165 Million Crypto Ponzi Scheme]
According to Reuters, a Georgia man, Edward Zimbardi, has been extradited from Fiji to the United States to face charges related to an alleged cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme. He is facing 12 counts of wire fraud, 12 counts of money laundering, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors allege that between June 2022 and August 2023, Zimbardi marketed a 'crypto program' to over 6,000 investors, claiming that an investment of $550 would allow them to purchase online advertising packages and receive a guaranteed 25% monthly return. In reality, he did not purchase any advertising packages but instead used the funds for forex trading, incurring tens of millions of dollars in losses. He also allegedly spent at least $10 million on personal expenses, including buying a house for his son and paying alimony, while using funds from new investors to pay off earlier ones. The scheme reportedly caused investors to lose over $165 million.
