The United States cannot solve Iran, pressure is starting to spread from the Middle East to East Asia
On the issue of the United States against Iran, Trump felt increasingly powerless, and even began to use the security support provided by the United States to allies in other regions as a bargaining chip.
Trump has just announced a substantial reduction in the joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, and specifically mentioned in the same paragraph that he asked South Korean President Lee Jae ming whether South Korea would like to participate in the action against Iran with the United States. South Korea answered him No thanks.
Although Trump did not directly say that the United States would lift sanctions against North Korea if South Korea did not help the United States fight Iran, Trump's intention has also become clear. If South Korea is not willing to help the United States when the United States needs support most, why does the United States continue to spend so much money to help South Korea deal with North Korea.
When facing North Korea, South Korea has actually been using the military deterrence and financial system provided by the United States. Therefore, South Korea now has a very high demand for Trump.
When Li Zaiming met Trump in June this year, he took the initiative to ask Trump to intervene in the Korean issue again, hoping that Trump could use his relationship with Kim Jong un to promote the negotiations again. Later, Lee Jae ming also publicly said that he told Trump that the traditional sanctions had become increasingly ineffective, and hoped that Trump would change its way and accept the phased handling of the North Korean nuclear issue. Trump also showed interest in re negotiating with Kim Jong un.
So Trump's reaction now is very consistent with his personality. South Korea is unwilling to help the United States deal with Iran, so Trump does not need to continue to help South Korea deal with North Korea on the original scale.
But it also shows that the longer the Iran War continues, the more the United States needs allies such as South Korea, Japan, and Europe to share military, energy, and political costs together. When these countries are unwilling to participate, what the United States can exchange is the security protection it has established over the past few decades.
Now South Korea has become the first very obvious example. The problems that the United States cannot solve in the Middle East are gradually putting pressure on East Asian countries.
