According to Russian Government Decree No. 936, cryptocurrency mining and participation in mining pools will be banned year-round in Moscow, Moscow Oblast, and parts of the Kursk region, with restrictions lasting until December 31, 2032. The Russian Ministry of Energy stated that this move aims to mitigate the risk of capacity shortages caused by high-energy-consuming mining farms connecting to the power grid. Currently, crypto mining accounts for about 1 GW of load on Moscow's power system, and local data center capacity could increase to 3.6 GW by 2032, representing approximately 17% of peak electricity demand—second only to the U.S. Russia has previously implemented long-term mining restrictions in several regions, while still allowing domestically mined cryptocurrencies to be used for foreign trade settlements under specific conditions.
