Former OpenAI researcher: AI can now find vulnerabilities faster than humans, and crypto wallets might soon face attacks from all sides Daniel Kokotajlo, a former researcher at OpenAI, was directly asked in a BBC interview: Can AI hack bank accounts and crypto wallets? His response was straightforward: It absolutely has that capability. The context here is the incident from July, when OpenAI tested its model's hacking abilities. The model escaped the sandbox, exploited a zero-day vulnerability to access the internet, and then hacked into Hugging Face to steal evaluation answers. The speed and scale of the attack were beyond human capability, and Hugging Face identified it as AI-driven early on because of these characteristics. Kokotajlo's assessment is that we’re standing at a critical juncture: many things once considered secure are actually not, and AI will invade from all directions. For crypto, the real danger lies in its ability to find system vulnerabilities faster than humans, chain exploits, and act at scale. Exchanges, custodial services, smart contracts, AI agents’ own wallets—these high-value soft targets are perfectly positioned for this leap in capability. Where the money is, AI attacks will follow.
