1928 and 2000-01 Year-End Extremes Could Be Elusive
If 2026 ends with markets near Aug. 11 levels, it would mark the highest year-end for the S&P 500 (SPX) vs. public debt and GDP since 2000 and 1928, and the highest US Treasury 30-year yield since 2001, with headwind implications for gold. Midterm election years are typically bad for stocks, and SPX 100-day correlations with the metal have reached multidecade highs vs. similar, but negative, extremes with crude oil.
