[South Korea Plans to Inject Over $700 Million into Sovereign Wealth Fund for Strategic Industries like AI Next Year] Deep Tide TechFlow reports that on August 12, Min Kyung-seok, head of the Innovation Growth Office at South Korea's Ministry of Finance, stated on Tuesday that South Korea is expected to deploy 600 billion to 1 trillion Korean won (approximately $707 million) in new funding next year into a new sovereign wealth fund targeting strategic industries such as AI. The final investment amount may exceed initial expectations, depending on the identified targets and their funding needs. Min Kyung-seok noted that there are currently no plans for the fund to directly invest in Samsung Electronics or SK Hynix. In July, the South Korean government announced the establishment of a "Strategic Industry Investment Account" under the Korea Investment Corporation (KIC), with initial funding exceeding 20 trillion Korean won (approximately 94 billion RMB). Investment targets include AI, semiconductors, data centers, and key overseas supply chain enterprises. The "Korean-style Sovereign Wealth Fund" is planned to be officially established and operational next year. Min Kyung-seok stated that the fund will also target robots, energy, batteries, and infrastructure such as power grids. Nuclear energy, space, and quantum technology are also under consideration.
