EU JUST FORCED GOOGLE TO OPEN ANDROID TO CLAUDE AND CHATGPT. HERE'S WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGES. The European Commission adopted two binding orders on July 16, 2026, under the Digital Markets Act, and they took effect immediately. Here's the actual asymmetry this fixes. Right now, downloading Claude or ChatGPT on an Android phone gets you an app. Gemini gets operating system powers the others can't touch. Invoked by holding the power button or saying "hey google." It can read your screen, act across other apps, tap into system-level functions no third-party assistant currently gets near. The order specifies 11 features across four categories, invocation, screen context, cross-app actions, and on-device processing access, that Google now has to open to qualifying rival assistants on equal terms. Two separate deadlines matter here. Search data sharing, anonymized ranking, query, click, and view data, begins January 2027. The Android interoperability itself has to ship in the next major Android version, expected mid-2027, with a hard deadline of August 1, 2027 at the latest. Google is expected to appeal. Under DMA rules, that does not pause the clock, compliance runs during an appeal, not after it. Google's own stated objection, through Kent Walker, their president of global affairs, is that this forces them to strip privacy and security vetting they currently apply before granting apps this level of device access. Worth watching the Apple precedent here too. Apple pulled its new Siri AI features from Europe entirely rather than comply with similar interoperability rules, a real warning that forced openness can shrink features instead of expanding them. What this actually means if you build with or on Claude specifically. For the first time, a Claude-powered assistant could become the default, always-on system assistant on an EU Android phone, not a sideloaded app competing for attention against Gemini's home-field advantage. That is a genuinely different distribution position than anything Claude has had access to before. This is europe-only, on a staged calendar into 2027. Nothing changes on a US phone today.
