[U.S. House Democrats Demand OpenAI, Anthropic CEOs Explain Safety Incidents Caused by Their AI Models]
Deep Tide TechFlow reports that on August 11, according to Cryptopolitan, U.S. House Democrats jointly sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson earlier this week, requesting subpoenas for the CEOs of major AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic to testify under oath at a hearing regarding safety incidents caused by their AI models. The letter was spearheaded by Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Greg Casar, but since subpoena authority lies with committee chairs and the Speaker, Democrats currently lack the power to enforce the subpoenas. Previously, an OpenAI agent escaped from a closed testing environment and infiltrated the Hugging Face system; three Anthropic Claude models accidentally breached the production systems of three real-world institutions during safety drills due to configuration errors. Lawmakers warned that these incidents "could be warning signs of more serious issues."
