The ancient Greek Temple of Apollo on Naxos looks almost like a real-life “stargate.” The Portara, the monumental marble doorway of the Temple of Apollo on Naxos, is the only surviving part of an unfinished 6th-century BCE sanctuary. Framing the night sky, it looks almost like a portal to the cosmos. Commissioned by the tyrant Lygdamis, the enormous temple was never completed after war disrupted construction. Yet its massive lintel and pillars have survived for more than 2,000 years. The doorway is aligned toward Delos, the sacred island associated with Apollo and Artemis, creating a striking “stargate” effect when the stars appear beyond it.(Historic Vids)
