[Russian Federal Security Service Raids Crypto Exchange Suspected of Money Laundering, Arrests Over 20 People]
According to Foresight News, citing The Moscow Times, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Friday that it conducted a series of raids in collaboration with the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs targeting illegal cryptocurrency exchanges in Moscow's financial district. Over 20 individuals were arrested, and nine unauthorized money exchange channels were shut down. These channels were accused of laundering money for phone scam groups.
The FSB stated that scam call centers based in Ukraine used gray market exchange points in Moscow to convert cash defrauded from Russian citizens into cryptocurrency, which was then transferred abroad. In an official video released by authorities, one of the arrested individuals claimed that their office laundered up to $2 million in a single day.
The detainees, mostly young people aged 18 to 25 from various regions of Russia, were hired as couriers to collect cash from victims. Some claimed they believed they were working as undercover agents for the FSB or the Russian financial regulatory agency Rosfinmonitoring.
The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched a criminal investigation into the large-scale fraud case, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The FSB stated that it will continue to verify the identities of victims to gather further evidence.
