OpenAI acquires AI chip startup Rain AI patent, previous acquisition negotiations failed to reach agreement On August 6th, according to The Information, OpenAI has acquired some patent assets from AI chip startup Rain AI. The two parties had previously negotiated the acquisition but ultimately failed to complete the transaction. Rain AI is a startup focused on AI chip research and development, founded about 8 years ago, with investors including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. According to reports, due to the failure of the acquisition plan, Rain AI has almost ceased operations recently, and most employees have left the company. This patent acquisition shows that although some of Altman's personally invested companies may have commercial partnerships with OpenAI, it does not mean that all invested companies will receive direct support from OpenAI. Rain AI has been committed to developing special chips for artificial intelligence computing, hoping to reduce the operating cost of AI models and improve edge computing capabilities through customized hardware. As competition for AI infrastructure intensifies, chips, computing power, and energy have become core strategic resources for large AI companies. Industry insiders believe that OpenAI's acquisition of Rain AI related patents may be aimed at absorbing its technological assets and strengthening its layout in the fields of AI hardware and computing infrastructure.
