AI agents are becoming the main visitors on the internet, with ~57% of global traffic now generated by bots. But when these agents want to buy APIs, data, or content, they often get stuck at registration and payment. Cloudflare just launched Cloudflare Wallets, and username reservations are now open at http://cloudflare.pay. The account wallet is tied to the user, holds stablecoins, and handles deposits, withdrawals, and strategy settings. Each agent gets a virtual wallet powered by an API key, and the owner can set spending limits, merchant whitelists, and maximum transaction amounts. If limits are exceeded, manual approval is required. Payments use the x402 protocol, an open-source standard promoted by Cloudflare in collaboration with Coinbase and over 25 other companies under the Linux Foundation's x402 Foundation. Servers respond to requests with a 402 status and a price quote. Agents pay in stablecoins, resend the request with proof of payment, and the gateway verifies and approves it at the edge. Micropayments can go as low as fractions of a cent, with sub-second settlement, and funds are sent directly to the merchant's wallet—no registration or payment system setup required for merchants. For Cloudflare, with 332,000 paying customers and a global network, acting as an intermediary for agent-based transactions and payments adds a new revenue stream on top of its existing business, with potential transaction-based commissions. For the industry, stablecoin micropayments make pay-per-use for anonymous buyers viable for the first time, turning the idea of usage-based pricing for APIs, data, and content into a potential reality. However, Cloudflare hasn’t disclosed details like custodians, supported stablecoins, fees, or regional coverage yet. For now, all you can do is reserve a username. The agent economy has been talked about for over a year, and finally, someone is building the infrastructure. Can it actually work? It’s fascinating that something web3 companies couldn’t pull off is being done by Cloudflare. This infrastructure is meaningful, but how it will actually be used remains unclear.
