Willy Woo @willywoo This data is pretty eye-opening:
Bitcoin lost through self-custody: 1.57 million BTC
Bitcoin lost through CEX storage: 1.51 million BTC
Almost a 50/50 split.
This reveals a harsh truth: the biggest risk to Bitcoin might not be someone stealing it, but you mismanaging it yourself.
The common belief in the past:
Storing on exchanges = unsafe
Storing yourself = safe
The slogan everyone shouts is: NOT YOUR KEY NOT YOUR MONEY
But the reality is, exchange risk means someone else controls your assets, while self-custody risk means *you* might become the biggest vulnerability. Especially after incidents like the Coldcard case, we need to rethink what "security" really means.
So after the Coldcard incident, I want to ask everyone:
How do you plan to store your assets?
