Every bear market comes with its own flavor of FUD.
2022: Bitcoin wastes energy.
2024: Bitcoin is only used by criminals.
2026: Quantum computers are going to kill Bitcoin.
Forbes went big with this headline—'The End of Bitcoin.' The core argument: Around 7 million BTC public keys are exposed on-chain, worth $470 billion, and theoretically, quantum computers could reverse-engineer private keys from public keys. An Ethereum Foundation researcher estimates a 10% chance of this happening before 2032.
Sounds scary, right? But let’s look at what the real money is doing: BlackRock, Fidelity, Coinbase, and seven other institutions just pooled $15 million to establish the Bitcoin Security Alliance, specifically to tackle this issue. After the $70 million Coldcard theft, the developer community is already seriously discussing post-quantum migration solutions.
The quantum threat is real, but it’s an engineering problem being actively addressed—not a death sentence. Packaging it as an apocalypse is just because doomsday headlines drive clicks.
I’m bearish on Bitcoin, but I’ve never needed sci-fi arguments to justify it—the reasons on the charts are already enough. True death sentences are always quiet: those altcoins that will never break even again, the ones FUD doesn’t even bother visiting.
