[Hugging Face CEO on AI Safety: Accelerate Forward! Open-Source Model Successfully Used for Defense Attempts, Bigger Picture Beyond Risks Cannot Be Ignored]
According to monitoring by Beating Insights, Hugging Face CEO Clem stated that now is not the time to slow down, but to accelerate forward! Recent AI-driven cyberattacks have everyone discussing the risks of AI. While we should indeed discuss these risks, we must not overlook the bigger picture. If we strive to do so, AI will make the world safer, just like most major technologies.
We’ve already seen a glimmer of hope: AI (more specifically, an open-source model) has been successfully used to defend against attacks. The same systems that help prevent AI-driven cyberattacks can now assist in defending against millions of cyberattacks daily, while also helping us identify and fix vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them.
To achieve this, I believe we need three things:
1. Increase transparency and mandate the tracking, sharing, and disclosure of incidents related to proxy cyberattacks.
2. Continue to classify AI-driven cyberattacks as illegal and impose meaningful penalties to serve as a deterrent.
3. Equip defenders with the best AI, especially open-source models, to reduce the asymmetry in capabilities between attackers and defenders.
If we accomplish these three things, AI won’t just introduce new cybersecurity challenges—it will fundamentally and meaningfully strengthen cybersecurity.
Recently, the OpenAI model intrusion incident at Hugging Face has gained traction, prompting U.S. lawmakers to propose a bipartisan bill, the 'AI Emergency Shutdown Act.' The bill requires developers of advanced/cutting-edge AI systems to retain technical capabilities to throttle, pause, or completely shut down systems, and authorizes the Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), in consultation with the Secretary of Commerce and the Director of National Intelligence, to intervene in cases where models are out of control or pose catastrophic risks.
