I’ve long been critical of the UX of self custody and the culture which encouraged it to remain terrible. Here’s a dirty secret: a large contingent of Bitcoin maxis do NOT care about mainstream adoption. They have little regard for people w different circumstances to theirs. They look at the technical barriers as a legitimate form of gatekeeping the community from “impurities”. It’s no less than elitism dressed up as virtue or concern for security. They love belonging to a counter culture , which has consumed their identities, and they can’t handle people unlike them benefiting from bitcoin without deferring to their values and acknowledging their “seniority”. It’s a complete lack of empathy that sometimes relishes in the suffering of others, whether through loss of Bitcoin, or exclusion altogether.
