[UK Proposes High Deposits for Data Centers to Curb Speculative Projects Occupying Grid Resources]
According to a report by Jinse Finance on July 29, citing foreign media, the UK Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) has proposed new regulations requiring data center projects to pay substantial upfront fees or provide financial guarantees, along with stricter project advancement milestones, to prevent speculative projects from occupying grid connection queue resources for extended periods.
According to a statement released by Ofgem, the proposed rules would require data center projects to provide 'significant' fees or other financial guarantees, such as letters of credit, performance bonds, or cash deposits. The regulator will release a consultation document on Wednesday detailing the calculation methods for these fees, how the UK National Grid System Operator will manage them, and under what circumstances projects may lose their grid connection queue eligibility and forfeit the fees or guarantees already paid.
