Too advanced to handle! South Korean lawmakers consider suing the government over leveraged ETF investor losses. According to Korean media, Kim Eun-hye, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, is exploring a national compensation lawsuit against the government for losses incurred by investors in single-stock leveraged ETFs tied to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Fellow party lawmaker Na Kyung-won is also calling for a comprehensive investigation and pushing for a parliamentary inquiry to probe the "rushed introduction" of such products by regulatory authorities. The controversy stems from leveraged products approved by the Financial Services Commission on May 27. After their launch, a flood of capital caused extreme price volatility, with the net assets of 14 products once reaching 16.28 trillion KRW. On July 16, the Financial Services Commission urgently raised the cash margin requirement from 10 million KRW to 30 million KRW. A showdown between the two sides may unfold at the parliamentary level.
