Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, plans to build cryptocurrency trading infrastructure and launch a digital custody system by December 1. This will support regulated crypto asset trading, custody, and settlement. The digital custody system will record customers' crypto asset ownership and handle most off-chain transactions. Sberbank will manage custody wallets for customer deposits, withdrawals, and transfers.
The plan is based on Russia's recently passed cryptocurrency regulation bill, which will take effect on September 1. Provisions requiring transactions to be conducted through licensed intermediaries are expected to be implemented by July 2027.
Under the regulations, public trading is limited to crypto assets that meet the Russian Central Bank's liquidity standards. Qualified investors will have access to a broader range of assets, but using cryptocurrencies to pay for goods and services within Russia remains prohibited. (CoinDesk)
