As Jensen Huang's first tweet, he chose to stand firmly behind the topic of open-source (open weights) AI. So, for such an important joint statement, A Corp, O Corp, and Google all refused to sign it (Microsoft and Meta did sign though ). The statement contains many bold and controversial viewpoints. For example, Jensen believes that distillation is OK. It's a learning mechanism with a long tradition and is part of the open-source spirit. Distillation shouldn't be equated with malicious theft of closed-source models (by malicious theft, I think this might include stealing code, reverse-engineering training data, or extracting knowledge bases, etc.). Secondly, broad open-sourcing does indeed make attackers stronger. This is what people often refer to as "giving a monkey a machine gun." But Jensen argues that whether it's open-source or closed-source, the monkey is going to get the machine gun anyway. However, with open-source, good and ordinary people can also gain the ability to counter those machine guns. I believe the recent battles Hugging Face has faced gave Jensen some theoretical support for this view (which is probably why Hugging Face also signed this statement hhh). When everyone is open, it actually becomes safer. To be honest, these closed-source AI companies are NVIDIA's biggest customers, and yet Jensen dared to make such a statement (even though it's currently a seller's market for GPUs). This shows that Jensen truly has a deep love for the open-source community and the software open-source movement of the last century.
