[BlackRock, Coinbase, and Others Establish $15 Million Bitcoin Quantum Defense Fund] Odaily Planet Daily News: BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Galaxy have formed the Bitcoin Security Consortium, committing a total of $15 million over three years to fund Bitcoin security research and open-source development focused on quantum computing defense. The consortium will not hold or allocate funds; each member will directly select the developers and researchers to fund. The consortium stated it will not guide Bitcoin development or comment on protocol changes. Mike Schmidt, a developer funding nonprofit Brink representative, will coordinate related work as a volunteer. Currently, there are no quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin cryptography. Approximately 6.9 million BTC, valued at $450 billion, are stored in addresses that could potentially be affected if such quantum computers emerge. Addressing this issue would require coordination among wallets, exchanges, miners, and users. Related efforts include proposals like BIP 360, which designs a new output type to limit public key exposure and integrates post-quantum signature schemes. Robert Mitchnick, Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock, stated that Core developers are doing critical work, and the organization will provide more funding to ensure Bitcoin's long-term security.
