When it comes to losing trades, I often ask myself three questions:
1. Should I cut my losses? Is this cycle over, and should I sell everything and take a break?
2. Should I add to my position? During event-driven moments, is the market reacting slower than expected?
3. Should I switch positions? Is there a better asset right now that I should move my funds into?
I've done all three before. I'm extremely loss-averse—seeing those red numbers makes me want to hit the 'close all' button immediately. Sometimes, if a particular asset loses too much, I blacklist it and never touch it again.
There are also times during event-driven trades when I feel the market hasn’t priced things in efficiently yet, and I believe there will be someone foolish enough to take over later, so I add to my position. Of course, once the event’s time frame is up, it’s time to exit no matter what.
When playing with small-cap coins, I’ve noticed that sometimes one coin’s data isn’t as good as another’s. In that case, it’s better to sell and switch to the other one. Or during 'value investing,' if both assets are losing money, it’s better to switch to the one with lower perceived value.
There are so many assets in the market—it’s not worth obsessing over the one that’s losing.
