[United Nations Report: Southeast Asia Cryptocurrency Scam Losses May Exceed $100 Billion, Comparable to the GDP of Some Countries] According to Decrypt, a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlights that the scam industry in Southeast Asia has solidified into a singular, interconnected criminal economy, with losses now comparable to the economic output of some nations. It is estimated that by 2025, losses caused by scam-related crimes in East Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand will reach between $88.3 billion and $114.1 billion, a figure that 'exceeds the GDP of several countries in the region.' A significant portion of this stems from cryptocurrency investment scams, most of which are conducted in large-scale criminal hubs. The agency urges law enforcement in Southeast Asia to undergo specialized cryptocurrency training to track and seize illicit funds, warning that strategies focused solely on disruption are ineffective.
