[Report: 52 Offline Violent 'Wrench Attacks' Targeting Crypto Enthusiasts in the First Half of This Year, Resulting in Total Losses and Ransom Amounts of Approximately $124 Million]
According to Bloomberg, blockchain security company CertiK reported that in the first half of 2026, there were 52 confirmed cases of offline violent 'wrench attacks' targeting cryptocurrency asset holders globally, a 33% increase year-on-year. The total losses and ransom amounts reached approximately $124 million, a significant rise compared to around $10.5 million during the same period last year. Among these, home invasion robberies saw the fastest growth, with 20 confirmed cases in six months.
France, due to its large local crypto ecosystem and multiple data breaches, became the country with the highest number of reported cases (Europe emerged as a high-incidence region, with France accounting for 33 cases, or 63.5% of global incidents). The report also highlighted that criminal groups are leveraging on-chain records, leaked customer databases, and social media information to precisely target high-net-worth cryptocurrency holders. The industry is facing increasing pressure to expand its focus from cybersecurity to personal and operational security.
