The US Department of Justice has seized over $25 million worth of cryptocurrency, involving a cross-border investment fraud network Odaily Planet Daily News: The United States District of Columbia Prosecutor's Office, in conjunction with the Washington Field Office of the United States Secret Service, announced that investigations into multiple international online fraud cases have resulted in over $25 million in cryptocurrency being seized, with funds suspected to have come from cryptocurrency investment scams targeting residents of the United States and Canada. This operation is part of the Scam Center Strike Force in the United States. The operation was initiated by Jeanine Ferris Pirro, the District of Columbia prosecutor, in 2025, and the total amount of recovered assets has exceeded $800 million. The US prosecutor's office stated that on July 21, 2026, the District of Columbia prosecutor's office submitted five civil confiscation lawsuits to the US district court, requesting the confiscation of over $25 million in cryptocurrency assets recovered in different fraud investigations. Investigators stated that these cases involve multiple money laundering networks, with victims spread across the globe. Criminal gangs lure victims into investing through false encrypted investment platforms, online dating scams, and other means, and hide the source of funds through multi-layer wallet address transfers and coin mixing operations. This seizure of funds involves five main investigations: in one case, Canadian law enforcement provided the US Secret Service with a wallet address suspected of transferring illegal gains. Investigators frozen the relevant addresses and traced over 270 suspected victim transactions, involving approximately 10.4 million US dollars; The second case involves online dating fraud, with over 200 victims defrauded. The illegal funds were transferred through hundreds of intermediate wallet addresses and mixed with other victims' funds, with a total amount of approximately 12.08 million US dollars involved; The third case involves a victim in the US Capital Region who participated in a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment project and lost contact with the fraudster due to failed withdrawals, with approximately $1.23 million in related funds; In the fourth case, a victim transferred millions of dollars in cryptocurrency to a fake investment account, and investigators traced some of the funds to six wallet addresses and froze approximately 2.39 million dollars; In the fifth case, the fraudster impersonated a "stolen funds recovery" agency and deceived the victim into paying fees, involving an amount of approximately $285000. The US Secret Service said that these cases are still under continuous investigation. Law enforcement officials are tracking the suspect behind the fraud network and will cooperate with international law enforcement agencies to investigate responsibility.
