**[Galaxy Digital Launches Bitcoin Quantum Security Initiative, Offering Up to $5 Million in Developer Grants]**
Odaily Planet Daily reports that digital asset company Galaxy Digital has launched a Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Program, offering up to $5 million in developer grants. The program will also conduct research initiatives through Galaxy Research and establish a Quantum Advisory Board composed of academic experts.
Galaxy Digital stated that the program will fund work related to post-quantum cryptography solutions and is expected to begin accepting grant applications immediately. The initial members of the Quantum Advisory Board include Barry Sanders, a professor at the University of Calgary; Damien Bérubé, an MIT Sea Grant Knauss Fellow; and Eran Tromer, a computer science professor at Boston University.
The program is aimed at addressing what researchers refer to as "Q-Day," the potential day when quantum computers could use Shor's algorithm to break the elliptic curve cryptography that protects Bitcoin, deriving private keys from exposed public keys, forging signatures, and extracting wallet assets. Old addresses and reused addresses are at higher risk.
A report from quantum security company Project Eleven in May suggested that quantum computers with cryptographic capabilities are more likely to emerge before 2033, possibly as early as 2030, and estimated that approximately 6.9 million Bitcoins are located in quantum-exposed addresses. In June, Coinbase's Quantum Advisory Board urged developers to begin migration efforts, estimating that around 7 million BTC are part of the vulnerable supply. (Decrypt)
