According to monitoring by Beating, the two-year-long collective lawsuit over Anthropic's book copyrights has officially come to an end. A U.S. federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion settlement, setting a record for the largest known copyright settlement in the United States. This is also the first major case in U.S. AI training copyright lawsuits to complete the trial, ruling, and settlement process. The court previously determined that using books to train Claude constituted fair use. However, Anthropic's downloading and storage of over 7 million pirated books still amounted to infringement. Over 91% of the relevant authors and publishers have applied for compensation. Some rights holders have opted out of the settlement and are pursuing separate lawsuits against Anthropic.
