[SK Chey Tae-won: AI Chip Demand to Soar by 100% Next Year, Nearly Zero New Supply, Storage Market in 'Complete Chaos']
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on July 20, the global artificial intelligence boom continues to sweep across the world. Korean media reported that SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won recently stated during a media roundtable at the Jeju Forum that global semiconductor demand will experience explosive growth next year. In particular, demand in the AI sector is expected to surge by 60%-100% compared to this year, while overall semiconductor product demand will also increase by at least 50%-60%.
However, Chey Tae-won warned that the market's new supply next year will be "almost zero," and the supply-demand gap may further widen. He described the current global storage chip supply-demand situation as being in "complete chaos."
He revealed that as financial consortia and tech giants worldwide scramble to secure chip supplies, companies are currently under immense lobbying efforts and significant pressure. He emphasized that the supply of storage chips is no longer merely a business issue for companies but is directly tied to national security. He pointed out that governments must find ways to ensure their domestic companies can obtain chips to maintain production operations. While the current pressure is primarily concentrated at the corporate level, he believes South Korea may also face pressure from other countries in the future.
