[U.S. Department of Justice Determines Downloading TikTok on Federal Devices Is No Longer Illegal]
According to a report by Radio France Internationale (RFI), the U.S. Department of Justice has determined this week that the federal law previously prohibiting the installation of TikTok on federal government devices no longer applies to the current version available in the United States. The law originally targeted TikTok and subsequent applications owned by ByteDance and its affiliated entities. In a legal opinion addressed to the White House Counsel's Office, the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel stated that Congress had banned versions with the same 'problematic ownership characteristics' at the time. Whether TikTok can be used on government devices is now up to individual federal agencies to decide, as agencies may still independently prohibit downloads based on considerations such as employee productivity. The White House has referred requests for comment on this matter to the Department of Justice.
