[Nine U.S. Congress members propose a bill requiring facial age verification for online gambling and prediction markets]
Odaily Planet Daily News: U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer and eight co-sponsors have introduced a bipartisan bill requiring online sports betting platforms and prediction markets to verify users' ages before logging in, placing bets, or conducting transactions. The bill is named the Facial Recognition to Protect Children Act and applies to online gambling and prediction markets.
Gottheimer's office stated that the relevant technology will read facial structures and patterns to estimate users' ages without storing identity or personal biometric information. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) classifies age estimation as facial analysis rather than identity recognition.
NIST previously evaluated six age estimation algorithms, finding an average error of 3.1 years on the same visa photo database, with performance varying based on image quality, age, gender, and region of birth. The full text and number of the bill have not yet been disclosed, and details regarding enforcement agencies, penalties, technical standards, and appeal mechanisms remain unclear.
