[New Codex Version Reportedly Restricts Third-Party APIs, Image Generation and Web Tools May Disappear] According to monitoring by Beating, developer Lao Ye's reverse analysis suggests that the new version of Codex will identify model service providers. After integrating third-party APIs, the client may no longer load tools such as image generation and web search. The model itself remains unchanged, but the client capabilities are reduced. Based on his tests, writing the Provider name as OpenAI can restore some functionality, but it will enable remote conversation compression. Long conversations will additionally call `/responses/compact`, which may lead to timeouts at the relay station. Another solution is to retain a custom Provider and add the x-openai-actor-authorization request header. Codex's open-source test code shows that this configuration can reopen web search and image generation tools. Codex CLI and app-server have been open-sourced, but the desktop client itself has not been open-sourced. The "secret downgrade" is currently still a personal reverse-engineering conclusion, and OpenAI has yet to publicly respond. [Original Link]
