Recently, the premium between SK Hynix ADRs on the US stock market and its Korean shares once exceeded 30%, and many people are wondering if there's any arbitrage opportunity here.
According to the Korea Securities Depository, starting from July 29, ADRs and local shares might be convertible into each other, but actual arbitrage is still very difficult.
First, it's asymmetrical: converting ADRs to Korean shares is easy, but converting Korean shares to ADRs depends on issuance quotas.
Second, even if there are quotas, retail investors can't really play this game. It requires brokers to apply separately and go through foreign exchange procedures.
The ones who can actually profit from this are institutions with the right channels and capital. Retail investors? Better stick to good old stock trading!
